Newport Aquarium Lock-in

7:30 pm

Newport Aquarium

Newport, KY

www.newportaquarium.com

The Newport Aquarium is having a family overnight Friday April 4 7:30pm to 9:00 am, Kids must be at least 6 years old. Passholder tickets are $25 per child to age 12, $30 adults and kids over 12. If you are not a passholder tickets are $40 and $50 respectively. If you would like to purchase a pass they are only $36 each and family rates are available.  If we have a large number of interested folks we may be able to make this into a private party instead-which would be really cool because we could have them tailor the talks to be more in-depth and have more scientist interactions. Even without that, though it looks to be a really fun time. Check it out at www.newportaquarium.com So far we have 1 adult and 2 12 yr olds committed. Feel free to call with any questions and I am looking forward to meeting y'all in person! Monthly Gathering - Gang Activity in Kentuckiana

6:30 pm

Fazoli's

337 Whittington Parkway (just off Hurstbourne, south of Shelbyville Rd)

Louisville

Gang activity and violence is often seen as a problem only in large cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Miami.  While many gangs may have originated and continue to thrive in such places, they have since proliferated into smaller communities like Louisville.  For April’s Monthly Gathering, we welcome Detective Juan Garrett, Gang Unit Coordinator from the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Detective Garrett will speak about this issue and how it affects all of us in Kentuckiana, as well as address misconceptions that we, being relatively removed from the problem, may have.  Join us in April for this fascinating discussion on gang violence and crime in our community—bring your questions and your appetite!  We will gather at Fazoli’s at 337 Whittington Parkway, which is just off Hurstbourne Lane south of Shelbyville Road (it’s basically right across the street from Piccadilly).  Dinner and socializing will begin at 6:30 p.m. and Detective Garrett will begin his presentation around 7:30 p.m.  If you have any questions, please contact Greg Carmichael (502-693-1355, gdcarmichael@gmail.com).

Please feel free to visit http://www.fazolis.com/ for more information regarding the chosen venue for this month.

Movie Night - 300

5 pm

Picadilly Cafeteria

133 Hurstbourne Parkway

Louisville

(502) 423-1733

This month Sean M. Kotran's SIG 'Movie Night' will be held on Saturday, April 26th at the Picadilly Cafeteria, 133 Hurstbourne Parkway, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  The selection this month is a bit more intense and not for the faint of heart.  With a rating of 'R' the film '300' is for adults only, please.

Synopsis:
Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, '300' is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Miller's (Sin City) acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale.

While the films historical representations might be somewhat convoluted (much to the dismay of any MENSAN) the movie itself is wildly entertaining and epic in scale.  If you failed to see this film at a theater you simply haven't experienced the full scope of the production.

Genre: Action/Adventure

Starring: Gerard Butler, Vincent Regan, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Michael Fassbender, Rodrigo Santoro, Andrew Tiernan, Dominic West, Tom Wisdom, Andrew Pleavin

Director: Zack Snyder
Screenwriter: Zack Snyder, Kurt Johnstad, Michael B. Gordon
Producer: Mark Canton, Bernie Goldmann, Jeffrey Silver, Gianni Nunnari
Composer: Tyler Bates

Check out this website for more information, trailers, clips, reviews and anything else you'd like to know:  http://imdb.com/title/tt0416449/

As usual there will be a one hour period beginning at 5 pm for everyone to find their seats and enjoy a nice meal.  The movie will begin promptly at 6 pm, projected in full 1080i HD on a huge 100" screen, so don't be late!

Culture Quest

5 pm

Lois Allen's home

Louisville, KY

RSVP to get the address and directions

loisallen3@cs.com

On April 27th, a Sunday Afternoon, American Mensa will hold Culture Quest, a trivia game of killer proportions. It will be at 5 pm, with simultaneous tests in various time zones around the country (4 pm in Central time, 3 pm in Mountain time, etc.) The Quest is held for 90 minutes only, and consists of about 100 questions and, usually, a map to fill in. It is very unlike the bar-type trivia we all enjoy so much.

In order to finish all the questions in the very short time allotted, it is most unwise to discuss each question! Discussions almost always degenerate into "I was in the 6th grade in '88 and I remember my school prom queen picked that song to sing in the talent show, so it must be...blah, blah." We can never finish if we do that.

Past teams have divided up the pages of questions to answer, with no discussion, hoping every question is read by every contestant in the first hour (no easy task). Then the remaining 30 minutes is for clarification and/or guessing. It requires strict adherence to such rules to enable the team to even finish. (We have never won).

After the 90 minutes, you can relax and discuss, munch and chat, but you can't change any answers. If this appeals to you, please let me know. The max number on the team is 5, all must be Mensa members, cost is $8 each. Let Lois know if you are interested! She volunteers her house and a boatload of junk food snacks.

If you are serious, she will need to see your 8 bucks before you are considered 'in.'

According to the current Yahoo Group postings, there may be enough interested parties to form two or more teams.
