SENG
Model Parent Group
In
1981, SENG established guidelines for SENG-Model Parent Support
Groups. Parents of gifted children are invited to participate in
a series to discuss the social and emotional needs of their
children, and the parenting issues related to those needs. The
emphasis is on positive aspects of parenting, avoiding power
struggles, and helping gifted children learn appropriate life
skills while enhancing the parent/child relationship and parent
self-esteem. $25 per family for 8 sessions ($200 total for the
series, please pay for missed sessions at the next session).
Seating is limited, so please call to reserve your spot early!

A
note from Michelle Shepherd, Gifted Children Coordinator: SENG
sessions are a great way to learn about your child's needs, they
offer great positive support, and you make some wonderful
friends along the way. Our Parents Of Gifted Students group was
started by a few parents who wanted to keep meeting beyond the 8
week session-and WOW has it been wonderful! |

CultureQuest for the Next Generation
For
many years Lois Allen has been organizing our local group’s
Culture Quest team, and we’ve had great fun participating. Now,
Michelle Shepherd is organizing a group of Young Mensans to
represent our area in the Culture Quest for the Next Generation.
The
competition will be held on a Sunday in mid April, with exact
date, time, and location to be announced shortly. This is a
wicked hard paper team trivia contest that groups all across the
nation take at the same time. Only the team captain needs to be
a Mensa member by April 1. Michelle already has one commitment,
so that means only four more are needed to register a team. We
can have numerous teams if there is enough interest, so please
contact Michelle if you or your child are interested. Team
members need to be finalized and registration sent in by March
20th. |

RG
Committee Report
I’m
sure that a wonderful time was had by all those who attended the
Game Night MG at Fazoli’s. In addition to games and good food,
Keith Rouda took the attendees through a short exercise to help
get ideas for future MGs.
The
idea for the activity came from the findings of the Regional
Gathering Committee. When I first suggested the idea of having
an RG, I was thinking of it very much as a Regional
Gathering where all of the members of our region could
get together. I thought it would be nice to have it outside of
Louisville so people who live far away could participate more
easily. I never wanted it to be about bringing outsiders in or
making money, I wanted it to be about bringing us together to
connect or reconnect as a group. I had suggested a big field
trip to Mammoth Cave or a day at a lake, with perhaps a catered
dinner and the option to camp or stay overnight in a local
hotel: simple, small, and all about enjoying the company of our
fellow Ms and the natural beauty of this region. I see now that
I was naively using “Regional Gathering” when really what I was
thinking of was more like a souped-up Monthly Gathering.
In
our meeting to discuss the possibility of having a Regional
Gathering, we talked for a long while about what it would take
to make an RG happen. As we discussed the logistics of getting
a hotel and making sure there would be volunteers to staff the
registration desk, run the hospitality room(s), speak on various
topics, find a keynote speaker, etc. etc. etc…I became
overwhelmed by how my suggestion to have an RG was growing into
something I never intended. My idea had originated with my
desire to help those in our local group who wanted to be more
active, involved, and invested in Mensa do so. I also wanted to
reach out to our members who don’t live in the Louisville metro
area. According to the most recent membership roster I have,
about 13% of our members live in the Elizabethtown area or
further south; certainly close enough for a day trip, but a
prohibitive distance for anyone who might otherwise have been
interested in the various monthly activities that happen all
throughout the year in Louisville.
When
we four members of the committee realized that we really don’t
currently have enough people on the committee to make an RG
happen, we decided that we needed to refocus our energy on
finding out what we could do to help make Mensa exciting and
relevant to our members. To that end, Keith has been working
with our Speaker Seeker Hart Hagan on ideas for future MGs. I
gave Keith a list of the activities that people suggested in the
survey to help in the exercise he lead at the Game Night MG, and
Keith has submitted the article on the next page to talk more
about their efforts.
