Ft. Knox Firehouse Tour

Here I am again happy to tell all that the Ft. Knox firehouse tour scheduled for Sunday, August 24th is a go!

My scheduled training should be concluded by lunch-time, so I'm thinking that a good time for the tour would be 2:00 pm.

The tour will take place at Ft. Knox Fire Station #2, Building #1609, corner of Wilson Rd. and Eisenhower Ave., right across the street from Ireland Army Medical Center.

There will be many interesting and fun things for the little ones to enjoy including coloring books, fire hats, fun with hoses and extinguishers, trying out some cool firefighting tech toys and of course

the always anticipated visit by 'Sparky' the fire dog! We'll also have a tour of the station and of all the fire apparatus in the house where the

kiddies can climb aboard and pull the air horn and blow the siren as many times as they want!

Here's the best way to find the firehouse; Take Dixie Highway (31w) South until you enter the town of Muldraugh (it's about 40 miles total from I65 and Gene Snyder).

Near the South end of the town is the first entrance you will find onto the post called Brandenberg Station Road. Take this exit and head East toward the gate and vehicle

inspection point (remember you will need identification for all adults in the car). Once through the checkpoint, follow Brandenberg Station Road southward (straight ahead)

for about a mile until you come across the first stop-light. Turn left here onto Eisenhower (heading East again).

You'll pass a Burger King on your left and encounter another stop-light where you should continue straight.

In about another half mile you'll come to another stop-light - this is the intersection of Wilson & Eisenhower! You will see our firehouse standing alone on the corner to your left.

Turn left here onto Wilson and then another left around the corner of the firehouse and into the parking lot. Congratulations - you've made it!!

If anyone has any difficulty I will stay near the phone (502)-624-5627 and help you find your way.

A side note here - I tried to Mapquest the address just to check it out and Mapquest was wrong - so don't trust those directions!

You can look up Fort Knox on Mapquest to get an idea of the street layouts, but as far as directions go - you should definitely trust me!

On another note, since it is a considerable drive to the post and the firehouse tour probably won't last much more than an hour, you might also consider visiting the Patton Museum which

is located here on post. It's chock full of interesting and cool military items and is a really neat and different place to visit! The museum is free and only accepts donations for entry.

Finally, those of you who plan to make the trip out this weekend, I'd appreciate an e-mail from you letting me know how many little ones will be coming out with you (so I can plan for supplies).

Well, that should about do it. If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you this weekend!

Independent Film SIG

Try to remember the last time you saw a really good movie.  Perhaps it moved you to uncontrollable laughter or tears.

Maybe it changed your perspective on the world or made you more self-aware. Was it a thriller or a horror flick that made you scared to go back to your car?

If none of those things, I’m sure it was a unique experience. Of the last ten movies you saw, you’re lucky if one of them affected you that way.

As Mensans, do we not yearn for more than the rehashed and overproduced summer fare that we are offered every year? Don’t get me wrong.

A good popcorn flick and a little escapism has its place and many of us relish our guilty pleasures, yet too often we forgo the opportunity to see film as art

or at least film that conveys the director’s vision, not a studio’s financial investment. Even though such films are accessible here in our community,

too often it is difficult to make time or convince our movie-going companions to take a chance and see something a little different.

I am proud to announce the creation of the Independent Film S.I.G., something I have been meaning to do for some time.

Film is perhaps my favorite medium of art and I make it a point to see more adventuresome, relatively unknown releases as often as I can.

Yet like the rest of us I get caught up in the hype of the blockbusters and the short attention spans of my friends.

I hereby designate the third Wednesday of every month as Kentuckiana Mensa Independent Film night. If you are interested, please contact me with your name,

email address and phone number and I will make sure you get all the details. Obviously a format like this makes it nearly impossible to plan too far ahead, so I’d like to get a core

group of interested folks whom I can contact about upcoming films.

Yard Sale For Brumleve-Blue Scholarship Fund

As a fundraiser for the Brumleve-Blue Scholarship Fund, Kentuckiana Mensa is planning a Club yard sale/rummage sale.

WHERE: Jane Martin Buckley's House

WHEN: Saturday, September 20th, 2008 8am to 2pm

There are at least 4 ways you can help and participate to make this a great event:

a) Sell your stuff at our yard sale. [If you bring your stuff and sell it our yard sale (you run your own table, and keep your money separate),

we will accept a flat $50 of your purchase proceeds as a gift to our fundraiser]. Bigger yard sales make everybody a winner.

b) Give your junk to our yard sale. Just drop your junk off and we'll sell it for your and keep all proceeds (for a good cause). Jane will run the big moneybox and is chief organizer.

c) Come and help sell other people's stuff (and have a good time too).

d) Come and buy some stuff.

For more information, call Jane Martin Buckley 580-3920.

WICKED – Group Ticket Event

We are trying to get a group together to see Wicked at the Kentucky Center. It will be showing in early 2009. Please contact Kelly Kane at kellykane@bellsouth.net if interested in attending.

Help Wanted - We Need You!

We are looking for volunteers to serve as proctors for our admission test.  We also have one more space to fill on the Executive Committee.

Plans are in the works for a yard sale fundraiser to replenish the Brumleve – Blue award account.  We will need people to help with the sale as well as any donations you might have.

This is a good chance to move out some of your unused items for a great cause!

Candidates Sought For AML National Offices

Would you like to take a more active role in setting policy for American Mensa? This could be the time for you to fulfill that goal.

The national Nominating Committee (NomComm) is looking for qualified candidates to run for the elected positions on the American Mensa Committee.

This includes the Chairman, the First Vice Chairman, the Second Vice Chairman, the Secretary, the Treasurer and 10 Regional Vice Chairmen.

Instructions on completing a Candidate Information Form, relevant Bylaws and ASIEs, and job descriptions are available on the American Mensa Web site in the

Members section at www.us.mensa.org/members. The NomComm information is the first article listed on that page.

Please contact Nominations Committee Chair Susan Heimlich at NomComm@us.mensa.org if you have questions regarding the nomination process.

Downstate Ms

VENUE CHANGE?

There seems to be some confusion regarding the current location of the Downstate Ms gathering place.

If Merl or any other member in the know would contact either Shana Lincoln or Sally McNally with the correct information, we will get it updated in the Kyosk and on the website.

Thanks!
